On June 1, 2026, the Jewish Museum Vienna lost a great friend with the passing of Alice Baar. Since the museum’s founding, she attended numerous exhibition openings and took a keen interest in our activities. Warm-hearted and spirited, she brought both enthusiasm and thoughtful criticism to our work. Her insights challenged our thinking, while her generous donations greatly enriched our collection relating to the Jewish sports club Hakoah.
Her grandfather, Arthur Baar, was the legendary coach of the Hakoah football team that won the Austrian championship in 1925. He was also among the veterans who, after being forced to leave Vienna in 1938, founded the sister club “Brith Hakoah 1909” in Ramat Gan. Arthur Baar left behind numerous photo albums documenting his life before and after the Second World War. These remarkable photographs have since been featured internationally in exhibitions and publications through the museum’s collection. Currently, a medal from this collection is on display at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles as part of an exhibition on football and the Holocaust accompanying the FIFA World Cup.

Alice Baar was born on September 2, 1952, in Ramat Gan. Around 1970, she moved to Vienna with her parents. Her father, Heinz Baar, served in the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Familiar with the world of diplomacy from an early age, one of her most significant professional roles was heading the Organizational Department of the Austria Center Vienna.
Driven by her love of Israel and her deep knowledge of its cultural landscape, she regularly translated books from Hebrew into German. Alice Baar was a person of political courage and strong social commitment. She will be greatly missed in many ways.
