He willingly talks about his exciting experiences in that year. The poet was arrested on March 13th – the day Austria was annexed to the German Reich – in his second home in Altaussee. He was immediately taken to the jail in Bad Aussee. The reason: The local postman had reported that Broch was receiving the magazine “Das Wort” from Moscow. This suggested that Broch was a Communist. In the end, however, the detainee is believed to be “politically harmless” and released after three weeks. In Vienna, Hermann Broch tries to get an exit visa. After overcoming numerous obstacles with a lot of luck, Hermann Broch finally arrives – after a stopover in England – in New York at the beginning of October. Friends and literary societies still proposed his nomination for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1951, the year he died.
